Mara Recklies female philosopher
©Timo Schuster

Hello, my name is Mara. I am a philosopher working on design, with a particular interest in the political dimensions of design, design epistemologies and design critique. However, as my publications and lectures reveal, I deal with a wide range of topics. For example, intersectional-feminist perspectives on design, the problems of the capitalist ways of life, and what we can learn about design from decolonial thinkers.

I am a research associate at the department of Design Studies at the Burg Giebichtenstein University of Art and Design Halle. Besides that, I'm pursuing a doctorate with a thesis on philosophical design critique in the 20th century at the Humboldt University of Berlin. I taught design ethics, design philosophy, design history and design theory and at several universities, including University of the Arts Bremen, University of Art and Design Kassel, HFBK Hamburg, Köln International School of Design, Burg Giebichtenstein University of Art and Design Halle and HTW Berlin. Furthermore, I was a research associate in the cooperative research network Translating and Framing. Practices of Medial Transformations at the University of Hamburg and the University of the Fine Arts Hamburg, where I researched urban and artistic interventions using experimental methods.

The transfer of knowledge from the academic world to the public sphere is an important matter for me. Therefore, I not only publish and speak for the academic community, but also make my research accessible to non-academics and design enthusiasts in interviews, popular essays, lectures and talks. If you want to know more about my work, I’d happily send you my CV. If you're looking for a paper or essay of mine, please do not hesitate to ask me. Requests for talks, texts, and collaborations can be sent to mara (at) recklies.de. Wishes, kind words, or greetings as well, of course. I am looking forward to your mail!
